Iowa Jobless Claims Up Slightly: Ongoing Claims More Troubling

DES MOINES, Iowa - Jobless claims in Iowa still high with the pandemic outbreak, but up by a relatively small margin of 1,926 in today's report. The jump from 26,901 to 28,827 follows a week when claims dropped by almost 16,000.

Almost 29,000 jobless claims were filed in the new report.

But ongoing claims are up by more than 20,000, which means unemployment is rising fast.

More than 170,000 Iowans filed continuing jobless claims in the latest report from the U.S. Labor Department. That number rose from 150,445 to 170,990.

Unemployment insurance benefit payments totaled $51,408,623.02 for the week, up from $48,091,551.28 of from the previous week

The following industries had the most claims: 

  • Manufacturing (7,402)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (4,190)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc. (4,182)
  • Retail Trade (2,472)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (2,130)

Nationally, more than 3.8 million workers filed first-time claims for unemployment benefits last week.

That means more than 30-million Americans have lost their jobs over the past six weeks amid the ongoing pandemic.

The biggest number of claims were in Florida, Connecticut, West Virginia, Louisiana, and Texas. The biggest decreases were in New York, California, Michigan, Georgia, and Washington.
