Study: Iowa has 7th least vulnerable population to COVID-19

DES MOINES, Iowa - The state has COVID-19 outbreaks at 32 long term care centers. Some Iowa counties with outbreaks at meat processing plants have had severe spikes in positive coronavirus cases.

A study by the New York Times from last week ranked Des Moines 5th in the nation for rising number of case.

But another study out Tuesday shows Iowa to have the 7th least vulnerable population to COVID-19 in the country.

The survey by WalletHub places Iowa 43rd in unsheltered homeless population, and 45th for jobless insurance claims.

The metrics used in the study included the share of a state's population 65 and older and the share of the population living in poverty.

It shows Iowa to have the least financial vulnerability of any state in the country.

Among Iowa's surrounding states, only Minnesota rates better in the WalletHub study for having fewer people vulnerable to COVID-19, ranking 4th.
