Iowa Has Two Possible Cases of COVID-19 Related Illness in Children

Iowa - The Iowa Department of Public Health says there are two possible cases of a COVID-19 related inflammatory illness that affects children in Eastern Iowa. One such case was reported late last week.

State epidemiologist Dr. Caitlin Pedati revealed the new information at Governor Kim Reynolds' daily virus update, but did not say where the children are being treated. The Gazzette reports the two are in the care of UnityPoint Health in Cedar Rapids.

Pedati said the children are in stable condition and that the health department is working to find out more.

The condition is referred to as both MIS-C (multisystem inflammatory syndrome) and PIMS — pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the condition is linked to COVID-19

The CDC says it has so far appeared in children who have tested positive for the virus, but the agency also says it's currently unknown if the condition is specific to children or if it also affects adults.

At least three young people have died in New York, where more than 100 cases have been reported.
