Two Iowa correctional officers assaulted by inmates

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Iowa State Penitentiary is investigating after two correctional officers were assaulted by two inmates this (Friday) morning.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections say the officers were taking an inmate back to his cell, when the inmate started throwing punches.

A second inmate then started punching and kicking. Other officers responded and took control of the situation.

Officials say a sharpened object was found on one inmate, but it was not used in the assault.

Staff and inmates were involved in the assault were checked out by prison medical staff, and no major injuries were reported.

The two correctional officers were seen by local medical providers, and had no major injuries.
