Des Moines Police Arrest 53 People From Late Night Protests

DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Police say they arrested 53 people overnight - 51 adults and 13 juveniles - mostly for failure to disperse or interference with official acts in connection with protests.

Crowds gathered well after a curfew took effect, and law enforcement let them protest for hours before releasing tear gas and flash bangs at around 11:45 at the state capitol.

Officers read a dispersal order five times before deploying the tear gas.

The Des Moines Register says one of its reporters was pepper sprayed in the eye and ear while holding a press badge and declaring to be a member of the press.

The protests are in response to the police custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
