University of Iowa Athletic Department Has One COVID-19 Case

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa Athletics Department reports a positive COVID-19 test among its returning athletes and staff.

The department said a total of 236 students, coaches, and staff tested negative. The department did not identify which group the positive test came from, or the sport they were associated with.   It says the testing was conducted as part of an effort to resume sports activities on-campus.

The person who tested positive will be required to isolate. The athletics department is conducting contact tracing to determine if any other people need to quarantine.

“Our medical staff has established our procedures and is leading our procedures in addressing positive test results,” Director of Athletics Gary Barta said in a statement. "The safety of all student-athletes and staff is critical. We have anticipated and planned for positive test results.”
