Des Moines Black Lives Matter Pressures for Governor Reynolds Attention

DES MOINES, Iowa - Des Moines Black Lives Matter is planning to gather outside the state capitol Wednesday at 10 am after holding a street party Tuesday night.

The group's Twitter feed invited anybody interested to come grill at it's street party Tuesday at the corner of 6th and Jefferson at 7 pm.

Earlier in the day, members of Black Lives Matter met inside the capitol with some lawmakers, including Democratic State Representative Ako Abdul-Samad, to pass a list of demands the group wants presented to Governor Kim Reynolds.

The four lawmakers the group met with committed to bringing their demands to the governor's desk.

The list consists of five demands. They include a call for Governor Reynolds to sign an executive order reinstating felon voting rights, a call for the legislature to do four things - end juvenile detention, decriminalize marijuana, pass the "More Perfect Union Plan" (that several Democrats crafted) and vote down a bill that allows teacher to use physical restraint on students in certain circumstances.

Black Lives Matter cancelled a march to the capitol Tuesday after learning all but a few lawmakers were not working. The group says it's being ignored by Governor Reynolds.
