Iowa lawmakers unanimously pass justice reform bill

The Iowa legislature has unanimously approved a justice reform bill (H26-47) to address police officer misconduct.

The bipartisan bill would ban most chokeholds by police, allow the state Attorney General to investigate deaths caused by an officer, and prevent an officer from being rehired in the state if they've been convicted of a felony, or were fired for misconduct.

The bill now heads to the desk of Governor Kim Reynolds.

After the bill's passage, Reynolds said in a statement "In Iowa, we know how to sit down at the table, listen to each other, and work together to move forward. Over the past several days, leaders of the Iowa legislature came together with shared goals and a commitment for action...These problems didn't arise overnight and they won't be fixed in day. We are just getting started."
