"One Iowa" celebrates Supreme Court's LGBTQ employment ruling

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's largest LGBTQ advocacy organization is celebrating a US Supreme Court ruling that says people can't be fired due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

"We've had protections for gender identity and sexual orientation in Iowa since 2007, but knowing our LGBTQ sibilings throughout the country are not protected is just a very unsettling way to live" says "One Iowa" Director Courtney Reyes.

She says even with the Supreme Court ruling, members of the LGBTQ community still face workplace challenges.

"The law of the land does not take away micro-aggressions and the lack of promotions that are happening to LGBTQ folks every day in the workplace. That is just a good motivation that yes, we have this, but we have to keep going" Reyes says.

Monday's ruling expands the meaning of the Civil Rights Act's ban on sex discrimination in the workplace. The Trump administration argued against that premise.

The sweeping civil rights law was passed in 1964.
