219 New Cases of COVID-19 in Iowa, 9 Additional Deaths

DES MOINES, Iowa - The state is reporting 219 new cases of COVID-19, along with nine additional death as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. Both categories have been trending downward over the past several days, an encouraging sign that the state may be .

Iowa's cumulative totals include 24,380 who have tested positive out of 234,405 tests overall with a positive rate of 10.8 percent. There have been 15,126 recoveries with a recovery rate is 62 percent. There are a total of 670 deaths from COVID-19 in Iowa.

The state reports 3,595 people were tested Monday. Governor Kim Reynolds has set a goal of 5,000 tests per day between the TestIowa program and the state hygienic lab. One in 14 Iowans have been tested for the virus.

Buena Vista County continues to show the biggest concentration of COVID-19 cases based on population, and that number continues to rapidly grow.

Buena Vista County now has 8,111 cases per 100,000 residents. By comparison, Crawford County has the second highest concentration per 100,000 - 3,631. Polk, the largest population county in the state, has 1,073 cases per 100,000. Overall cases have been on the rise in Polk County, and surpassed 5,000 total Friday.

The state has conducted 26,935 Serology tests to find anti-bodies in people who have contracted and recovered for COVID-19. There have been 2,138 positive Serology tests, accounting for 8 percent of those tests.

The state is reporting COVID-19 outbreaks at 35 long term care centers, down one from Monday. There have been 350 long term care center deaths, accounting for 52 percent of the state's total.

Overall, COVID-19 case counts have flattened since early May, and are slowly tapering off for the past month.

The numbers for the state only represent COVID-19 figures compiled by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Unreported cases and deaths could make the actual figures different.
