Storm Lake Superintendent Says Racial Slurs Were Aimed at Students

STORM LAKE, Iowa - A northern Iowa school superintendent says racial slurs uttered at a high school softball game are repugnant.

Storm Lake Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole released a statement late Wednesday calling attention to people driving by a softball game Monday who yelled out racial slurs, including a derogatory term for Latinos.

Cole called the behavior repugnant, and said Storm Lake students have experienced racism and bigotry in recent years at sporting events and other school activities.

The Storm Lake Community School District is majority Hispanic, according to Public School Review.

Cole said the behavior doesn't represent the other team in the softball game from Spirit Lake.

She said students should speak out and defend themselves against injustice taking place.
