Midwest Bagged Salad Recall, Dozens of People Sick

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hy-Vee is recalling a line of bagged salads after The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) connected the product to an outbreak of an intestinal parasite.

The FDA reported Friday that a multi-state outbreak of Cyclospora had been linked to garden salad products from Hy-Vee, Aldi and Jewel-Osco and recommended that customers avoid them.

Hy-Vee announced the recall Saturday, telling customers to either throw away the salad or return it to the store for a full refund.

According to the FDA's report, 76 illnesses had been reported, 28 of which had been from Iowa. Cases were also reported in Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri and Nebraska, six of the eight states Hy-Vee has locations in.

Symptoms of Cyclospora include diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and low-grade fever.

Jewel-Osco has also recalled their line of garden salad.
