DES MOINES, Iowa- Unity Point Health in Des Moines is closing the maternity department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital at the end of July. The move is creating future capacity for general medical and surgical patients at Iowa Lutheran.
“This decision was made after careful consideration of both the short term and long term health care needs of our community. The consolidation creates efficiencies for maternity services and will position our Iowa Lutheran Hospital team with the ability to treat and admit more general medicine and surgery patients,” says Tom Mulrooney, chief operating officer for Iowa Lutheran Hospital.
“In addition, we know we will need more beds later this year as we care for both flu and COVID-19 patients. We are taking proactive steps now to be more fully prepared to meet community need.”
Those working at Iowa Lutheran's maternity department will be relocated to maternity departments at Iowa Methodist and Methodist West.
UnityPoint Clinic Family Medicine – East Des Moines will continue to provide prenatal care at their offices on the Iowa Lutheran campus and admit their patients to Iowa Methodist Medical Center for deliveries. Likewise, Midwife Services of UnityPoint Health – Des Moines will transition their patients to both Iowa Methodist and Methodist West Hospital for deliveries.
“We are ready to care for these additional moms and babies at Iowa Methodist and Methodist West,” says Dr. Steve Stephenson, president and chief operating officer for Blank Children’s Hospital and Women’s Services. “By consolidating our services together on two campuses, we can use our resources as efficiently as possible and continue to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our families.”
