Des Moines Schools to Meet Monday Over Starting Classes Entirely Online

DES MOINES, Iowa -The Des Moines School Board Monday will consider a plan to start the school year completely online.

Superintendent Thomas Ahart has recommendation schools start with "fully virtual instruction" and move to in-person classes once COVID-19 conditions improve.

The plan violates the states requirement for all schools to hold 50 percent of classes in-person, unless virus infection rates reach a certain level - 15 percent in the district's county over a 14-day period with a school absentee rate of 10 percent.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds last week said schools failing to meet the 50 percent requirement would not receive credit for days they are non-compliant. She also said said school administrators who defy the state's rules could face licensure discipline.

The Des Moines School Board will also vote Monday on whether to delay the start of school in the district until September 8th.
