One Person Dead in Fiery Crash Near Grimes Late Sunday Night

DALLAS COUNTY, Iowa - One person is dead after a fiery single vehicle crash west of Grimes late Sunday night.

The Iowa State Patrol says the SUV was traveling so fast it vaulted Highway 44, went out of control and slid sideways into a tree before catching fire.

WHO-TV reports investigators are trying to figure out if the crash is connected to a high-speed chase involving Polk County deputies that was called-off eight minutes before the crash was reported.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office is working on a positive identification.

The crash was reported at 11:49 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 44 and Avenue W.The car was traveling southbound on Highway 44.

The State Patrol says deputies had been trying to pull over the driver of a blue SUV on Highway 141 in Granger on suspicion of drunk driving, but called the chase off because of safety concerns.
