Historic Newton Hotel Gets National Honor After Apartment Restoration

NEWTON, Iowa - A transformed hotel in Newton is getting national recognition.

The Hotel Maytag Apartments is a 2020 recipient of the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Excellence Award in the Historic Preservation category from the low-income housing trade group, the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition.

The historic Hotel Maytag was renovated in 2019 into a mixed-income apartment building with 45 units. Thirty-six of the units are available to renters who earn 60% or less of the median income.

The building also has a movie theater, cafe and wine bar. It was originally build in 1926.

Iowa U.S. Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst and U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack, whose district includes Newton, congratulated the Hotel Maytag project in news releases.

“The restoration of the Hotel Maytag would not have been possible without access to these federal tax credits,” said U.S. Representative Loebsack in a video statement. “I’m proud to be a longtime supporter of these credits, which have helped buildings across Iowa get revitalized and preserved for future generations to enjoy."

“Congratulations to the Hotel Maytag Apartments,” said Senator Ernst in a video. “They are the recipients of the 2020 Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Award. We want to thank you so much for the redevelopment of the beautiful space providing affordable housing in Newton, Iowa. We really, really appreciate your efforts. Thank you so much.”

“Congratulations to the Hatch Development Group on the presentation of the Charles L. Edson Tax Credit Award, presented by the Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition," said U.S. Senator Grassley. "Aside from providing more affordable housing, its project to renovate a historic hotel in Newtown, Iowa shows how existing, historic structures can be used for needs we have today. When the Hotel Maytag was built in 1926, I doubt anyone involved in its construction expected the building would be helping to meet affordable housing needs almost a hundred years later."
