Threat of COVID-19 Outbreak Delaying Start at Iowa Elementary School

FREEMONT, Iowa - The start of classes at Freemont Elementary School, south and east of Des Moines, is being delayed over COVID-19 concerns.

The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont district superintendent, Scott Williamson, has announced that multiple staff members at Fremont Elementary are exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms with one testing positive.

Williamson said the Freemont Elementary building will be closes at least through Friday, but the closure could be extended. Wednesday was scheduled to be the first day of class. Williamson said he expected to make decisions involving COVID-19, just not before elementary students began class.

An analysis of the entire Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont CSD district showed three parents testing positive for the virus, leading to eight students being placed in quarantine for 14 days. No staff members have tested positive.

The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont district covers five counties that have COVID-19 positivity rates ranging from 4.2 percent to 14.5 percent.
