University of Iowa to Hold Fall Commencement Ceremonies Online

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The University of Iowa will be holding commencement ceremonies for the fall semester virtually this year.

The University says the decision was made out of concern for the health and safety of students and staff amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While students graduating in the spring or fall of 2020 will not have had an in-person ceremony, university officials say they'll try to allow graduates to participate in-person at a future ceremony.

The University released a statement, saying:

"We know how much these ceremonies mean to our students and their families. And while December seems a long way off, we feel it is the right decision to make now to maintain the health and safety of the entire campus community."

Spring 2020 commencement ceremonies were previously held online.
