State Medical Examiner Discourages Practice Used at Some Iowa Schools

WAUKEE, Iowa – The Waukee School District is reportedly moving students around every 12-14 minutes in order to minimize consecutive time spent next to classmates.

The Iowa Starting Line reports the district instructed teachers to start the practice early this month.

State medical director Dr. Caitlin Pedati recommended against the practice at a press conference last Thursday, saying it creates more opportunities for COVID-19 to spread.

The Starting Line quoted a parent of a student at Woodbury Central High School in Moville who believes the breaks could help schools avoid quarantines.

Waukee administrators say the practice is meant to get students moving as part of a health effort, not to avoid quarantine guidelines.
