Iowa Woman Arrested Over Condition of Exotic Birds at Her Des Moines Home

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Des Moines woman faces animal neglect charges after 11 exotic birds were found living in substandard conditions at her home.

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa characterizes the birds as living in deplorable conditions.

Sixty-three-year-old Deborah Barber is charged with four counts of animal neglect after being arrested by Des Moines Police Tuesday.

The Rescue League, which intervened with police to remove the birds, says nearly a foot of trash covered the floors of the house and included rodent droppings.

The 11 birds - including cockatoos, parrots and cockatiels – were transported to the Animal Rescue League last Wednesday.
