Insurance Claims from Iowa's August Derecho Top $1.6 Billion

DES MOINES, Iowa - Insurance claims from the August derecho have now topped $1.6 billion.

The Iowa Insurance Division says that money represents the 80 percent of claims that have already been paid.

It says insurance companies are still holding more than a billion in reserve for the remaining claims.

Homeowners have made far and away the most claims and have had the most paid, followed by farm owners.

The National Weather Service has named the August derecho one of 16 billion dollar disasters across the U.S. this year.

The Iowa Insurance Division is asking policyholders with outstanding claims to be patient while waiting for payment.

“The Iowa Insurance Division has been monitoring the insurance industry’s response to the Derecho and the industry’s role in Iowans’ recovery efforts,” said Iowa Insurance Commissioner Doug Ommen.
