Iowa House Republicans Retain Leadership After Gaining Seats in Election

DES MOINES, Iowa - Republicans in the Iowa House are retaining the same group of leaders for the next legislature in January.

The party, which gained seven seats to in last week's election to boost its majority standing, has voted to re-elected Pat Grassley, of New Hartford, as Speaker of the House. That marks the second year in the top leadership position for Senator Chuck Grassley's son.

The other three top spots are also being retained for a second year. The includes Matt Windschitl of Missouri Valley as House Majority Leader, John Wills of Spirit Lake as Speaker Pro-Tem and Mike Sexton of Rockwell City as House Majority Whip.

The 2021 legislative session begins Monday, January 11. Republicans hold a 59-41 majority in the Iowa House. Democrats had hoped to gain the majority before losing seats in last week's election.
