Iowa DOC Says Prison Inmate Assaulted Officer

FORT MADISON, Iowa - An Iowa corrections officer has facial injuries after reportedly being assaulted by a prisoner at the Fort Madison penitentiary.

The Department of Corrections says the officer was struck several times with closed fists after being approached by an unprovoked inmate.

The department says the inmate was subdued by additional staff.

The officer was taken to a hospital for injuries to the face, and was later released.

The Corrections Department says it's still investigating what took place. The inmate was not injured.
