Find Out If Your State Has Coronavirus Restrictions Ahead Of Thanksgiving

As millions of Americans prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, health officials are worried about the potential for the coronavirus pandemic to worsen. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has urged people to avoid traveling this year as many states are taking a proactive approach to deal with the surge in cases.

Some states, such as New York, are placing limits on private gatherings to reduce the chance of community spread. Other states have enacted curfews and imposed new limits on bars and restaurants. Take a look below to see what restrictions are in place in your state or the state you may be traveling to.

Alabama

A statewide mask mandate is in effect until 5 p.m. on December 11.

Alaska

There are no statewide mandates about wearing masks or restrictions on local businesses. Local communities are free to enact their own coronavirus policies.

Arizona

There is no statewide mask mandate, though about 90% of the residents are subject to local mandates requiring people to wear face coverings.

Arkansas

There is a statewide mask mandate, and restaurants are allowed to open with limited capacity. On-premise alcohol consumption must stop every night at 11 p.m.

California

A curfew is in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. in counties that are in the strictest level of the state's pandemic restrictions. Indoor restaurant dining and indoor church services are also prohibited in those counties. The state also has a mask mandate.

Colorado

There is a statewide mask mandate and indoor dining banned in counties that are at the highest risk of coronavirus.

Connecticut

All restaurants, entertainment venues, and indoor and outdoor events must shut down by 10 p.m. There is a statewide mask mandate.

Delaware

Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 people, and restaurants can operate at no more than 30% capacity. Masks are mandatory in public.

Florida

Florida does not have a statewide mask mandate.

Georgia

Gatherings larger than 50 people are banned. The state does not have a statewide mask mandate, but local governments are free to implement their own mandates.

Hawaii

Travelers must provide proof of a negative test, or they will have to quarantine. The entire state has a mask mandate.

Idaho

Indoor gatherings are limited to 50 people and outdoor gatherings to 25% of capacity. Masks are only required to be worn inside long-term care facilities.

Illinois

Illinois has a statewide mask mandate and has put restrictions on businesses. Retail and personal care services are allowed to operate at no more than 25% capacity, and outdoor activities will be limited to 10 people or less.

Indiana

The state has a mandatory mask order in place. Restrictions vary by county based on the rate of community spread. For most residents in the states, that means gatherings of more than 50 people are banned.

Iowa

The state has a mandatory mask mandate.

Kansas

A statewide mask order has been in effect since July.

Kentucky

Indoor gatherings will be limited to two families with no more than eight people. All restaurants and bars must close indoor dining until December 13. Outdoor dining will be allowed with some limitations.

Kentucky has had a statewide mask mandate that lasts until December 4.

Louisiana

A statewide mask mandate is in effect, and there are occupancy and crowd restrictions for most businesses and gatherings.

Maine

All outdoor and indoor businesses that provide seated food and drink service must close by 9 p.m. Everybody is required to wear a mask.

Maryland

Restaurants and bars must close by 10 p.m., and all retail businesses, religious institutions, and other venues must limit indoor capacity to 50%. Those who leave the state must get tested and self-quarantine.

Massachusetts

A curfew is in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., and establishments must close at 9:30 p.m. Private gatherings at people's homes are limited to 10 people inside and 25 outdoors. They must end by 9:30 p.m. All residents must wear face masks even when they can maintain six feet of social distance.

Michigan

Gatherings inside homes will be limited to two households. Eat-in dining at restaurants and bars is suspended.

Minnesota

Bars and restaurants must stop serving at 10 p.m., but they can still offer takeout and delivery. Minnesota has had a statewide mask order since July.

Mississippi

A mask mandate is in effect in 15 counties across the state until December 11. Businesses can remain open in a limited capacity and must adhere to guidelines issued by the Mississippi Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Missouri

The state does not have a mask mandate.

Montana

Bars, restaurants, and casinos must close at 10 p.m. and can operate at 50% capacity. Public gatherings and events must be limited to 25 people, where it is not possible to practice social distancing. Montana has had a statewide mask mandate since July.

Nebraska

Nebraska does not have a statewide mask mandate. Health officials said they would limit indoor gatherings to 10 people and outdoor gatherings to 20 people if 1,170 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19.

Nevada

Nevada has had a statewide mask order since June and has placed some restrictions on indoor dining.

New Hampshire

All people over five years old are required to wear a mask in public spaces.

New Jersey

Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 people, while outdoor gatherings are capped at 150. New Jersey has had a statewide mask order since July. Local officials can impose restrictions on businesses and restaurants.

New Mexico

All non-essential businesses must remain closed while essential businesses can operate under reduced occupancy. New Mexico has had a statewide mask order since May.

New York

Indoor gatherings at private homes will be limited to no more than 10 people. Bars and restaurants with a liquor license must close by 10 p.m.New York has had a statewide mask order since April.

North Carolina

Indoor gatherings are limited to 10 people. The state has a mask mandate in effect.

North Dakota

A mask mandate is in effect until December 13. All bars and restaurants must limit capacity to 50% and stop all in-person service between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m.

Ohio

A nightly curfew is in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Ohio has had a mask mandate since July.

Oklahoma

All bars and restaurants must stop in-person food and alcohol service at 11 p.m.

Oregon

Restaurants and bars can offer takeout service only, and grocery stores are limited to 75% capacity. Social gatherings are not to include more than six people from two households. Oregon has had a statewide mask order since July.

Pennsylvania

Anyone who visits Pennsylvania must be tested within 72 hours or quarantine for 14 days. Restaurants are limited to a 25% indoor occupancy limit. A statewide mask mandate is in effect.

Rhode Island

Indoor gatherings must be limited to single families, and the capacity for outdoor events is capped at 75 people. Rhode Island implemented a statewide mask order in May.

South Carolina

South Carolina does not have a statewide mask mandate and is not planning to enact any new statewide restrictions.

South Dakota

The state does not have a mandatory requirement to wear masks.

Tennessee

Tennessee does not have a statewide mask mandate.

Texas

Bars can operate at 50% capacity as long as COVID-19 patients take up no more than 15% of available beds.

Utah

A statewide mask mandate was issued on November 8. More targeted measures are being enacted at the county level based on the community spread of the virus.

Vermont

All travelers going in or out of Vermont are required to quarantine. Bars and social clubs will be closed to in-person service, and restaurants must close to in-person service by 10 p.m. All establishments are required to keep a daily log of visitors. Vermont has had a statewide mask mandate since August.

Virginia

Gatherings are capped at 25. Alcohol sales will be prohibited at dining establishments, must end at 10 p.m.Virginia has had a statewide mask mandate since May.

Washington

Indoor social gatherings with people from more than one household are prohibited unless attendees have quarantined for 14 days or tested negative for COVID-19. Restaurants and bars are only allowed to offer to-go service and outdoor dining with tables seating no more than five people. Washington implemented a statewide mask mandate in June.

West Virginia

A statewide mask mandate is in effect.

Wisconsin

The state recommends residents stay home and limit gatherings to households only. Wisconsin has had a statewide mask mandate since August.

Wyoming

Indoor and outdoor gatherings without social distancing are limited to 25 people. The state does not have a mask mandate.
