Altoona, Iowa man killed in I-80 chain reaction crash

(Polk County, IA) -- An Altoona man was killed in an I-80, chain-reaction crash Thursday afternoon. The Iowa State Patrol says 46-year-old James Bartels, who was driving a Hyundai Accent, failed to slow down when he drove into congested traffic on the interstate. The Patrol says Bartels hit a Ford SUV driven by Roger Lear of Waterloo. Lear's SUV then hit a Chevy Pick-up driven by David Hobbs of Ankeny.

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. near Altoona. The Patrol says Bartels was not wearing a seat belt.
