Des Moines man facing 2nd WOI, in deadly east side crash

(Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines man is facing a long list of charges including Vehicular Homicide and his 2nd OWI, after a deadly crash on the city's east side. Police were called to East 33rd and Euclid around 8:40 p.m. last (Thursday) night. Witnesses tell police a driver was speeding and driving erratically and crashed in to three vehicles.

Police say 71-year-old Linda Vander Hart was a passenger in one of the vehicles that was hit. She died of her injuries at the hospital. Seventy-four-year-old Daniel Vander Hart who was driving, was injured and is hospitalized. Police say there were no other injuries.

Sixty-seven-year-old Bertoldo Zuniga has been charged with Vehicular Homicide by OWI, Vehicular Homicide by Reckless Driving, OWI-2nd Offense, Failure To Stop In Safe And Secure Distance, and Failure To Maintain Control. Zuniga has been taken to the Polk County Jail.

Police say impaired driving and excessive speed appear to be factors in the crash.
