Iowa City to Create Position for Diverting Police From Mental Health Calls

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa City has a new plan in place to replace police from responding the mental health calls.

The city council voted 6-1 Tuesday night to create a law enforcement liaison position.

That person will work with the police department in responding to mental health crisis calls.

The aim is to have crisis teams and mental health professionals respond to those calls instead of officers.

The council's vote formalized an agreement between the city, Foundation 2, and CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank to create a law enforcement liaison position.
