Eastern Iowa Recovering From Massive Wreckage During Thursday's Storm

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Travel in eastern Iowa is slowly returning to normal after numerous accidents and lengthy delays from Thursday's winter storm.

Several of the crashes were multi-car pileups resulting from jack-knifed 18 wheelers.

The Grundy Register reports one person died in a pileup on Highway 20 that totaled five semis and three cars.

The Iowa State Patrol handled hundreds of crashes during the storm that at times involved blizzard conditions.

By the numbers, troopers responded to 165 crashes and assisted 285 drivers before 9 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic was backed up from crashes on I-380 in Linn County, Highway 30 in Benton County, Highway 151 near the Amana Colonies and I-80 near Oxford.

A 40-vehicle pileup on I-80 west of Newton Thursday afternoon resulted in numerous injuries ranging from minor to serious. Several state trooper cars were crushed in the wreck. The officers were not injured, having left their vehicles to assist others at the time.
