Iowa Marks One Year Anniversary of First COVID-19 Cases

IOWA - Iowa is marking the one-year anniversary of its first cases of COVID-19 being reported.

Governor Kim Reynolds announced three cases last March 8th of people who'd just returned to Johnson County from a cruise in Egypt.

Reynolds declared a "disaster emergency" the following day, and in the next week announced a ban on gatherings of more than 10 people, and the closure of bars, restaurants and gyms.

The first COVID-19 death was reported two weeks later.

Monday, Reynolds is asking people to remember those who've died from the virus.

At the time the first cases were reported in Iowa, the virus had infected roughly 100,000 people and killed 3,400 globally.

As of Monday morning, there have been 367,149 COVID-19 deaths in the state and 5,558 deaths.

Iowa became a hot spot for the virus in November and was singled out nationally for having one of the worst outbreaks.
