(Johnson County, IA) -- Volunteers with Iowa Bird Rehabilitation Sunday released Canada geese back into the wild after nursing them back to health. Geese were wrangled into crates, loaded into cars and transported to Iowa City where the geese were released at City Park in Iowa City.
Iowa Bird Rehabilitation of Des Moines had been nursing the birds back to health after many fell ill during Iowa's extreme cold weather last month. Nearly 100 dead and dying Canada geese were spotted near Coralville last month. Wildlife experts say the geese had been feasting on nutrient deficient shad fish, which made them ill.
Volunteers captured them and the geese were transported to Des Moines, and given a healthier diet. I-B-R says they lost one goose, but the others have recovered.
Jenni Boonjakuakul with Iowa Bird Rehabilitation says her group released nearly 40 geese Sunday.
