Poll Shows Majority of Iowans Hope Sen. Grassley Decides Not to Run Again

Senate Finance Committee Considers Xavier Becerra For HHS Secretary

DES MOINES, Iowa - A new Des Moines Register Iowa Poll shows a majority of the state's voters hope Senator Chuck Grassley decides not to run for reelection.

The poll conducted last week shows 55 percent of Iowans hope Grassley decides not to run, including a third of fellow Republicans.

He filed paperwork earlier this month for a possible run for an eighth term n the U.S. Senate, and has said he'll make final decision this fall.

Grassley would be 95 years old at the end of another that would start in 2023. He's currently 87.

Grassley's status for reelection is getting increased attention nationally as five Republican Senators have announced they'll be retiring next year. They include Senators Rob Portman of Ohio, Richard Burr of North Carolina and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Grassley easily won reelection in 2016, getting 60 percent of the vote, beating Democrat Patty Judge by 24 points.

No Democrats have announced they're running for Grassley's seat in 2022.One Republican, State Senator Jim Carlin of Sioux City, has said he will run whether Grassley seeks an eighth term or not.

Grassley was first elected to the Senate in 1980. He served as president pro tempore of the Senate from 2019 to 2021. He is known to be physically active and a jogger, running two miles most mornings.
