Iowa Following National Trend of Falling COVID-19 Numbers

IOWA - Iowa continues to follow a national trend of falling numbers for the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are now just two outbreaks at nursing homes after a peak of more than 150 late last year.

Numbers compiled by the New York Times show a continued downward trend in Iowa for cases, deaths and hospitalizations.

The state ranks in the middle of the pack for its rate of new cases, but most all states are seeing a steady reduction of COVID-19's impact.

There remains some concern that variants of the virus could lead to a new surge in cases, but there's been no major increase in recent weeks.

Other concerns center on whether the country is reaching a plateau where new cases remain in the range of 60,000 per day, a number that's been sustained through the month of March so far.

About a third of Iowa's populations has been vaccinated with at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and about 14 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, according to data from the state.
