Fundraiser launched to fix ship named after Iowa brothers

(Buffalo, NY) -- A fundraiser's underway to fix a Navy vessel named after Iowa's Sullivan brothers. The USSTheSullivans destroyer recently started taking on water. Organizers are trying to raise one million dollars to make permanent repairs.

The ship honors the Waterloo brothers (George, Francis, Joseph, Madison, and Albert) who died when their ship (USS Juneau) was sunk by a Japanese sub in November 1942 in the Battle of Guadalcanal. It's considered the greatest military loss by any one American family during World War Two. The story inspired a motion picture, "The Fighting Sullivans," released in 1944.

The vessel is one of the most popular museum ships at the Buffalo Naval Park in Buffalo, New York.
