Faulty furnace blamed for Ames house fire

(Ames, IA) -- There were no injuries but it was a very frightening day for an Ames family when their furnace malfunctioned, sparking a fire that caused $100,000 in damage, according to investigators.

The Ames Fire Department was called to 305 Topaz Court around 10:40 a.m. on reports that flames and smoke were coming from the home's furnace.

When the fire crews arrived smoke was coming from the roof and the fire had spread to floor joints and the walls of the house.

The Ames FD reports that fire and smoke damage caused extensive damage to the home.
