Flags at half-staff Monday, to honor slain Iowa prison staffers

(Des Moines, IA) - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff March 29, 2021 from sunrise to sunset in honor and remembrance of correctional employees Lorena Schulte and Robert McFarland who were killed in the line of duty at the Anamosa State Penitentiary on March 23, 2021. Schulte was a nurse at the prison, and McFarland was a correctional officer. Both will be laid to rest on March 29, 2021. 

“Our state grieves the loss of two public servants who were attacked while on duty at the Anamosa State Penitentiary,” said Gov. Reynolds. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with all of their loved ones and colleagues as they cope with this senseless tragedy. We will exhaust every available resource to deliver justice to those who committed this act and bring a sense of closure and peace to the victims’ families.”

Funerals for Schulte and McFarland will be this Sunday in Cedar Rapids. A public visitation for Lorena Schulte will be held at the Legacy Center at Murdoch-Linwood in Cedar Rapids, the funeral and burial will be private.

A public visitation will be Sunday at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids. A Celebration of Life service will be Monday, March 29th at Antioch Christian Church in Marion. Burial will follow at Czech National Cemetery.
