Iowa doctor offers COVID shot fatigue advice

(West Des Moines, IA) -- A Des Moines area family practice physician is offering some advice to those who will soon be getting their 2nd dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Barbara Hodne of the Iowa Clinic in West Des Moines says some patients report feeling very fatigued after the second dose. She recommends keeping a light schedule the day of the second shot, and getting plenty of rest and fluids.

Dr. Hodne is also reminding those who have yet to receive a vaccine, to do so at their first opportunity. The Iowa Clinic has been hosting vaccination clinics for patients. Dr. Hodne says that's been an efficient way to vaccinate, since doses come in large quantities and must be used as quickly as possible when opened.

The Iowa Department of Public Health says nearly 1.5 million Iowans have received at least one dose of a vaccine so far, and nearly 580-thousand are fully vaccinated. The state is expecting an increase allotment of doses in the coming weeks. Starting next week, vaccine eligibility will be expanded to 16-and older throughout the state of Iowa.
