Iowa State Prof: Suez Canal jam likely to cause global headaches

(Ames, IA) -- A super-sized shipping vessel is reportedly no longer stuck in Egypt's Suez Canal. The ship became stuck about a week ago, causing billions of dollars in global shipping delays.

Iowa State University Business Professor Scott Grawe says it could likely cause headaches for retailers, expecting goods to arrive from Asia in time for planned marketing and advertising campaigns directed toward consumers.

Grawe is the Supply Chain Management Department Chair in ISU's Ivy College of Business. He says the delays not only impact retailers waiting for product, it could impact manufacturing companies waiting for parts from southeast Asia.

He says the situation will also likely aggravate the already tight supply of empty cargo containers, needed by Chinese companies. Manufacturers in China have been struggling throughout the pandemic to get empty shipping containers.
