Iowa State, National Governing Body Investigating After Crew Club Deaths

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University says it’s looking into policies and procedures at all of its school sports clubs after two members of the school's Crew Club died in a boating accident.

Iowa State says it’s looking at whether the level of independence at the sports clubs is appropriate

It's immediately creating the position of Sport Club Safety Officer to look into oversight of the clubs.

ISU says USRowing is investigating the boating accident and the safety policies and practices for the Crew Club. USRowing is recognized as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States.

Since the accident, the Crew Club has suggested three actions that should be taken: building a dock; repairing or purchasing a new launch boat; and, implementing a mandatory swim test for team members.

The Crew Club says it's now requiring swim tests for members and has started fundraising for a new dock.

ISU Crew Club members Yaakov Ben-David and Derek Nanni died in the boating accident last Sunday Morning on Little Wall Lake in Hamilton County.
