DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa communities taking part in National Drug Take Back Day tomorrow expect it to be a "haul." That's what the Governor's Office on Drug Control Policy said happened last fall, when a similar event was held.

"Five and a half tons of medications were collected from Iowans in that four hour time span, " said Dan Woolery director of the Governor's Office on Drug Control Policy.

He says Iowans are encouraged to take unused or unwanted medications to drop-off sites. Events will be in about 100 Iowa communities.

Hy-Vee is participating in National Drug Takeback Day.

The Midwest grocer says it's taking any unused, unwanted, or expired drugs in communities in several states.

Hy-Vee says it's made drug take-back receptacles available for the last few years and has collected more than 60,000 pounds of prescription drugs to date.

Several communities also offer year-round drop-off locations.
