Iowa Sen. Ernst Defends Embattled Rep. Cheney, Calls for Party Unity

IOWA - Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is showing support for Congresswoman Liz Cheney.

Ernst told Politico that Cheney has the right to stand her ground in opposition to former President Donald Trump.

Republicans in the U.S. House are moving to strip Cheney of her leadership role because of her continued push back against Trump’s claim that the election was stolen from him.

Ernst told Politico that she appreciates Cheney, and said any elected official should stand their ground.

Senator Ernst also told Politico that Republicans need to recognize differences within the party and come together with a goal of winning elections.

Ernst is the No. 5 leader in the Senate Republican conference and will seek to be No. 4 in the role of Republican Policy Committee chair when Missouri Senator Roy Blunt retires next year.

Cheney is the third ranking House Republican, but could be tossed out of her position by a vote of her colleagues as early as next week.
