DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa's weekly jobless claims are not seeing a major change.

First time claims were up in the most recent week.

But ongoing claims, which closely align with the actual unemployment rate, were largely unchanged.

Iowa's overall monthly unemployment rate is seventh lowest in the nation - 3.8 percent.

By the numbers, first time weekly jobless claims jumped by 760, from 3,582 to 4,342, a spike of about 18 percent. First time claims were up 20 percent in the previous week.

First time claims can wobble by seemingly wide margins from week to week without greatly impacting overall longer range numbers.

Ongoing claims for the most recent week were actually down by a miniscule 48, from 26,173 to 26,125, a change to small to be measurable, following a 5 percent increase in the previous week.

Ongoing claims reached a peak in the early stages of the pandemic of more than 191,000 in late May of 2020.
