Man Serving Life Sentence for Davenport Bar Murder Dies in Prison

FORT MADISON, Iowa - An 87-year-old man serving a life sentence for a 1970 Christmas Eve murder in Davenport is dead from natural causes.

Robert Overstreet was convicted of second degree murder in 1971 for shooting Leymon Fields three times at Freeman's Tap in Davenport.

Overstreet appealed his conviction in 1976 but the Iowa Supreme Court upheld the sentence.

He spent more than 50 years in prison before his death at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison on Friday.
