Polk County residents owe millions in over-due property taxes

Debt unpaid and past due accounts

(Des Moines, IA) -- Timing is running short for Polk County residents behind on their property taxes. County Treasurer Mary Wells says overdue bills must be paid by close of business June 21st, to avoid the county's annual property tax sale. Wells says residents owe more than $8.6 million dollars. She says that represents nearly 2,900 properties. She says the numbers will fluctuate greatly this month, as residents clear their overdue bills.

Polk County did not have its annual property tax sale last year due to the pandemic.

Wells says interest in this year's sale is about average. Potential buyers have already had to meet an earlier deadline to qualify for the sale.
