DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Des Moines police department says it happens every year.

Police are starting to get complaints about people shooting off fireworks in the Des Moines area.

"That slow crescendo to the 4th is already starting," says Sergeant Paul Parizek. "Just in the last 24 hours, we've responded to about 34 complaints of fireworks in the neighborhoods."

He tells WHO Radio News there could be many more by this weekend.

"You could probably take that number and multiply it by ten when we, as we actually get to the holiday about how many we'll be answering in a 24 hour period then."

Sgt. Parizek says he usually has a fireworks report out by the 5th, so we'll learn more about how Iowans celebrated Independence Day early next week.

Anyone caught setting them off in Des Moines city limits could face a more than 600-dollar fine, in some cases.

Several Des Moines area cities have their own rules for lighting fireworks on private property.

2021 ushers the return of city fireworks displays, after the pandemic postponed or canceled many of them last year.

West Des Moines is having their firework show Sunday night at 9:30.

The All American Extravaganza at Prairie Meadows in Altoona is tomorrow night beginning at 10 a.m.

The Iowa Cubs have fireworks tonight and tomorrow night, too.
