One Person Dead After Officer-Involved Shooting in Jones County

The individual shot by law enforcement during the late evening hours of August 31st has been identified as 45 year-old Jeremy Michael Berg of Elkport, Iowa. An autopsy has been scheduled for today (Thursday) with the Iowa Medical Examiner’s Office.

(Martelle, Iowa) -- One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Jones County.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded to a large structure fire in Martelle on Tuesday evening and encountered a person holding a knife. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the situation and ordered the person to drop the knife. When the person refused to comply, two Jones County Sheriff's deputies shot the suspect, who later died at the scene.

Three Anamosa Police Department Officers and one Linn County deputy also discharged their weapons. All officers who fired weapons at the scene have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The Iowa State Fire Marshal's office is conducting an investigation into the cause of the structure fire.
