Central Iowa couple killed in I-35 chain reaction crash

(Story County, IA) -- A man and woman from Van Meter died in a multi-vehicle crash on southbound I-35 near Ames yesterday (Tuesday). The Iowa State Patrol says a semi crashed into the trailer of another semi, causing a chain-reaction crash.

The Patrol says a semi, driven by 32-year-old Matthew Rewiltzer of Eagle Bend, Minnesota failed to stop in a safe distance for vehicles that had slowed due to traffic congestion, causing the chain-reaction crash near mile marker 106, south of Ames. Gordon and Nora Martens were traveling in a GMC Canyon pick-up truck that was part of the multi-vehicle collision. The Patrol says the Martens were killed, and a third person was injured. I-35 southbound was closed yesterday for several hours due to the crash
