(Des Moines, IA) -- A state investigation has found an officer was justified in a shooting that led to a northern Iowa man's death.

A Winnebago County Sheriff's Office shot 48-year-old James Anderson September 11th, when Anderson pointed his weapon toward officers. Anderson died at the hospital.

The Iowa Attorney General's Office has concluded that the actions of Deputy Joshua Douglas were entirely legally justified.

The shooting took place at 164 Van Buren Street in Thompson on September 11th. The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office had received a 911 call about an assault, and when Deputy Douglas arrived he encountered James Anderson with a 9mm handgun. Anderson admitted the 911 call was a ruse and there was no assault. Authorities say Anderson, who was despondent over a recent medical diagnose, refused to drop his gun as officers negotiated with him. When he pointed the gun at officers, he was shot.
