(West Des Moines, IA) -- West Des Moines Fire crews are checking for hot spots at the scene of a large fire last (Monday) night. An investigation is also underway to pinpoint the cause and origin of the fire. Crews were called to the Valley West Inn Extended Stay hotel on Westown Parkway, west of Valley West Mall around 11:15 p.m.

Fire Marshall Mike Whitsell tells WHO Radio news building A had the most damage, but buildings B and C were also damaged by fire, smoke, and or water damage.

The building was constructed prior to codes which mandate hotels have sprinkler systems.

When fire crews arrived on scene last night, there were residents of the hotel climbing out of windows and handing children out of windows. Officials say two people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, and several others were treated on scene for minor injuries. Officials say at least 100 people were displaced by the fire.
