(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines Police are releasing the name of a woman shot by a police officer Tuesday night downtown. Police say the person injured is 35-year-old Katherine Margaret Louise Mehle of Des Moines. She's hospitalized in critical condition. Police say Senior Police Officer Ryan Chareunsab encountered Mehle in the 14-hundred block of Walnut, after a 911 call about a woman armed with a knife who tried to stab a man who walked nearby.
The reported the woman continued to follow him as he walked eastbound on Walnut. Police say when the first officer arrived, the woman advanced toward him and ignored his commands to drop the knife. The officer then shot the armed woman, who was taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Officer Chareunsab has served with the police department since 2013.
