Derailed train spills coal and diesel into Mississippi River in Iowa

(Montrose, IA) -- A train derailment Saturday night spilled coal and diesel into the Mississippi River.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says a train struck a barge near the Mississippi in Montrose, Iowa. The collision overturned several coal cars and released several hundred gallons of diesel into the river.

According to Iowa DNR, local emergency responders, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Coast Guard are working together to cleanup the scene.

No injuries were reported.
